M-BRANE Science Fiction, February 2009… (Coming Soon!)

With Arkham Tales, Atomjack, and Necrography just around the corner, I would have to say that this will probably be my last story acceptance for the year 2008.  I’ll have about 30 stories coming out over the next 12 months to some very fine and familiar publications. However, there’s a new magazine that will be available in print and PDF format come February.  It’s a monthly.  The pay isn’t big, but with subscriptions and good authors that could change.  A very likable venue, too.   Simple looking.  It’s called M-BRANE SF.  It looks very promising, and Christopher Fletcher is an extremely nice editor.  He also does reviews and SF analysis, too.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES/SF REVIEWS:

http://mbranesf.blogspot.com/

I don’t know who the first two issues consist of yet, but since I could not find a banner, I thought this public domain pic of a space shuttle entering the atmosphere would be cool.  In other news…

FRESH BLOOD, my collection from Sam’s Dot Publishing, has currently surpassed the 60,000+ word mark (making it novel-length).  Also, writers have been emailing me in regards to my hiatus rumors.  Other than Sam’s Dot… YES, where smaller genre publications are concerned, 350 publishing credits will mark a form of retirement for me, and 2009 will not only be a year off… but a year of book promotions, outlining projects, direction, new ideas, and most important, change

Happy Holidays everyone.

Now available in print is my fifth appearance to one of England’s longest-running — and also most widely read next to Interzone — small press magazines of Hard Science Fiction/Space Exploration.  JUPITER SF.  Edited quarterly by Ian Redman, Jupiter has become home to many prolific names and British stars in the speculative fiction field today.  A magazine worth checking out, and with stories that are sure to please.  Over five years running, each issue is aptly named after a satellite either orbiting Jupiter or within close trajectory.

Pablo Lennis #250, September 2008… (appearances)

I’ve missed the last few months worth of fanzine entries, so I’ll start again fresh here. I have a story in the special — and rather thick, might I add — 250th Anniversary Issue of Scifi’s longest running fanzine.  PABLO LENNIS, Issue #250… 22 Years in print.  And over that 22 year period, tons of great authors and poets, prolific and new, have come and gone.  To be honest, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s one of the last snail mails of its kind left.  It’s where my fiction first saw print back in the mid-90’s, and it’s edited by John Thiel of Indiana.  John, God Bless, and here’s to the next 250 issues…

There’s a ton of reprinted short stories over the last two decades from some very fine and familiar authors — old-schoolers! Not to mention articles on science and religion, book and movie reviews, and SF poetry.

Pablo Lennis, May 2008… (appearances)

Been a long month in the writing department (so many short stories to churn out for so many places), but my latest acceptance is actually a last-minute reprint, and it comes to one of the longest running zines of science fiction and fantasy literature.  PABLO LENNIS.  Issue No. #246.

PABLO LENNIS #246; May 2008

Like last month’s issue, its contents are rather abstract in form.  It’s also the first issue in quite some time to feature a thin, semi-gloss cover.

This issue features works by: Lawrence Dagstine, Paul Truttman, Steve Sneyd, Albert Manachino, Gerald Heyder, John Binns, Herbert Jerry Baker, Peter Layton, Rose Gordy, Gary Every, and Joanne Tolson.

Jupiter SF, October 2008… (5th acceptance)

My latest acceptance for the month of April 2008 is actually my 5th over the last two-three years to editor Ian Redman’s ‘JUPITER SF’.  It’s one of the UK-Small Press’s most widely read hard science fiction publications, and probably just behind Interzone.  Published quarterly, they are now in their fifth year of existence.  In today’s marketplace not too many small magazines last that long but, due to its popularity, JUPITER has defied those odds.

Escape Velocity #3, April 2008… (appearances)

Well, various  Web-based messageboard communities almost collapsed a second time yesterday because certain folks just weren’t sure whether or not Lawrence Dagstine was going to appear in ESCAPE VELOCITY, Issue #3.  Check the Table of Contents, I’m there.  I had mistakenly been left out due to a ‘substitute story email being missed’ or crossed somehow.  It seems Escape Velocity has changed its word lengths, too, and they now prefer much SHORTER works.  My original story for them was just too long, and somehow no communication came of this.  But, thanks to Robert Blevins, editor for the magazine, the problem has been solved

Clarke (which, with its stunning full color pictures, makes the issue worth every nickel), and full coverage of the Northwestern Science Fiction Convention… NORWESCON 31.

PABLO LENNIS #245; April 2008

The latest issue of NOVA Scifi, No. 20, is finally available.  NOVA SF is easily one of the best hard, soft, or religious scifi magazines available today in the smaller presses.  Like England’s Jupiter SF (www.jupitersf.co.uk), the stories won’t let you down.  NOVA SF #20 is my third appearance within their pages.  I am also, for the 3rd or 4th time this month, ‘Feature Author’.  The artwork this month is dedicated to my story, “A Soul to the Stars.”

They’ve been around a few years.  They only accept snail mail submissions.  If you have a manuscript that’s Hard SF or Religious SF and well-written in nature, and you have some kind of science fiction resume to back up your experience, then I’d query them.  They are listed in the Writer’s Market and indexed by Locus Online.

Alternate Perceptions #46, Spring 1999…

And now, direct from the DAGSTINE LAND archives… A Blast from the Past…!

November’s Blast from the Past brings us a MAJOR non-fiction UFO/Paranormal magazine from the 1990’s, which was available on Newsstands and in Borders.  Back in the spring of 1999 I put my journalism skills to good use and nabbed my first two-page spread, and my first non-fiction/freelance writing credit.  Hard to believe that was over eight years ago.  I even had my picture between the pages with a theoretical article on a religious subject we know very little about: Angelic and Human association.

alternate_perceptions.jpg

The name of my first non-fiction article: “Origins of Man: Were Angels our Teachers and Forefathers?” Between the pages of “Alternate Perceptions”, Non-Fiction Journal of UFOs, History, Native Spirituality, and Paranormal Phenomena.  Yeah, I know… All that fun ‘unsolved mystery’ kind of stuff.  To my knowledge, they’ve switched to an irregular online format: http://www.mysterious-america.net/

Here’s what the magazine and editorial staff were all about:

http://www.answers.com/topic/alternate-perceptions

The links above are all that remains of this once great magazine.  When I walked into Borders with my mother and saw Issue#46 on the magazine rack, she told me how proud of me she was.  After all, this was my first non-fiction sale.  I was only 25.  Other features to this issue included an article on Nostradamus by Dr. Greg Little.  Also, non-fiction by Dr. Susan Shumsky, Al Fry, Scott Dow, Brent Raynes (editor), and Dr. Berthold Schwarz MD, among others…

Until next time… 😉

OG’s Speculative Fiction (opinion guy; acceptance)

I just had an acceptance this evening to OG’s Speculative Fiction.,  a.k.a. The Opinion Guy! They’re a paying print-online publication, and award-winning writer Seth Crossman is the editor.  Over the years they’ve featured such authors as: Lou Antonelli, Kristine Ong Muslim, Jason Earl, Karen Romanko, Brian Dolton, and Angeline Hawkes…

opinionguy.jpg

OG’s Speculative Fiction:

www.theopinionguy.com

For sample back issues, these are what they look like.  I have no idea yet what issue I got into.  It could be late this year or sometime next.  But each print issue is between 24 and 30 pages long.  And anywhere between 4 and 5 authors or poets per issue.  Two authors most of the time.  Must be hard to break into this market.

The Ultimate Unknown #23, Summer 2001…

And now, direct from the DAGSTINE LAND archives… A Blast from the Past…!

Well, sort of.  I have to start cataloging some of these older magazine appearances.  Many of them have long since gone defunct (out of biz, basically), but it’s hard to believe that my name first started appearing in print years ago in small press magazines like this one. You may or may not recognize some of these zines of old but, who knows, you might recognize the names at least.  The authors who graced the interiors or covers way back.

ultimate_unknown.jpg

The Ultimate Unknown, Issue #23.. Summer 2001

SF Stories by: C. David Hay, Douglas M. Stokes PhD, Barbara A. Custer, Rhonda Jackson, Edward M. Turner, John Picinich, Rose Devi, Daniel S. Irwin, Erik Wilkins, Joanne Tolson, Travis Shephard, Josh Bingham, Terry Pieszchala, K.A. Williams, Kristy Mitchell, Joseph Veronmeau, Joseph Benjamin, Denny J. Corbin, David Combs (also the editor), DF Lewis, Lawrence Dagstine, J. Alan Erwine, and Susan L. Taylor.  Cover art by Chris Friend, who I believe also did the cover for the most recent issue of ‘Werewolf Magazine (no. 7)’…

Trust me, I wish URL’s were still available for these classic zines.  They don’t make them like they used to.  My first small press print magazines, other than Pablo Lennis, were between 1999 and 2001.   Every so often I’ll update the old with the new.  I have a lot more to catalog and archive, so this will become a new feature to my blog.

Until my next blast from the past… 😉

Pablo Lennis, October 2007… (appearances)

I’ve got a new story this month in the October 2007 issue of Pablo Lennis.  Editor-in-chief John Thiel runs one of the oldest stapled-up science fiction & fantasy fanzines out there. He’s been putting it out since the 1980’s.  Pablo Lennis was also the first place to ever publish me, with a SF tale back in spring 1996, called: “The Empty Planet.”

pablo_lennisoct07.jpg

Lineup of scifi & fantasy writers, SF poets, and serialists include the usual suspects: Joanne Tolson, Albert Manachino, Chester Cuthbert, Joe Napolitano, Gary Every, Mel Waldeman, Steve Sneyd, Lawrence Dagstine, and more! Published monthly, John Thiel, alongside Elmwood Kraemer, also write the zine’s science fiction television, movie, and book reviews.

They accept SF, Fantasy and Poetry via SNAIL MAIL.  Payment is one contributor copy and some decent small press exposure (circulation 100 to 150).  Sample copies are only two dollars.   Submission address below:

Now THIS is why I write sci-fi… (science fact)

I snagged some of these artist-rendered pics of Extrasolar Planets from MSN, roughly 10 in all.  Some of these places are only a few light years away, but they’re just awesome.  51 Pegasi, the exoplanet in the first pic was actually the title of my third written short story back in 1996.  My third story ever.  You can see how one would be inspired to write about this kind of stuff.

51pegasi_1.jpg

51 Pegasi(the first extrasolar star)

In a few centuries, mankind will be traveling to these places.  Look at the wonder below.  I live for this kind of fiction, I live for the magic.  This is why I write science fiction… This is what motivates me to stay within this genre.  Man’s domination of the stars!
